The HIP Alliance on the passing of George Bizos

George Bizos

It is with great sadness that we received the news of the passing of Advocate George Bizos, SC a South African of Hellenic origin and an active participant in the HIP Alliance’s programmes and activities.

George Bizos an advocate of Human Rights

Adv Bizos dedicated most of his life to fighting for Human Rights, Equality, and Democracy, something he sustainably continued until his last days.

We will always remember him as a courageous man who never shield away from tackling even the most insurmountable odds. Armed with integrity on the one hand and with Truth on the other, he went about effectively pushing back the frontiers of prejudice and injustice.

We will forever be grateful to Adv. Bizos for the critical role he played in our Country’s transition to democracy and equally his contribution to South Africa’s Interim Constitution and Bill of Rights.

From World War II to apartheid

Like many before him, Advocate Bizos arrived in South Africa after a trying voyage of escape from Fascism that was sweeping Greece at the time and became involved in the South African Greek Community. Never comfortable living under Nationalist rule in Apartheid South Africa, once describing how then Minister Jimmy Kruger said him that Greeks and other Minorities were tolerated under sufferance, this spurred him on to a greater sense of Justice and Equality.

Odyssey to Freedom

As we convey our heartfelt condolences to the Bizos family, all the children and Grandchildren that he so fondly spoke about at every opportunity, we also pause to quote from George’s Biography, “Odyssey to Freedom.”

“When you set out on the Voyage to Ithaca, Pray your journey may be long, of the Laestrygonians and the Cyclops and the furious Poseidon, do not be Afraid”.

“Poor through you may find her, Ithaca has not deceived you.

Now that you have become so wise, so full of experience, You will have to understand the meaning of Ithaca”.

Advocate Bizos’s Odyssean journey has come to an end and he has straddled both the Country that gave him birth, Greece and the other that adopted him, South Africa. He has made both of them his Ithacas , and neither has deceived him.

It is now up to us as future generations of South Africa to embrace the embodiments of Advocate Bizos and follow his Odyssey towards a truly democratic, non-racist and non-sexist country and global fraternity.
