It’s that time of the year – Panto time at the Joburg Theatre! It’s traditional, silly, synonymous with the holidays and theatre-loving Joburgers wouldn’t dream of missing the pantomime and having a laugh with friends, family and loved ones.

Jack and The Beanstalk

This year, producers Joburg Theatre and Bernard Jay are delighted to present Jack and The Beanstalk on The Mandela Stage at Joburg Theatre.

South Africa’s multi-award winner, “queen of the pantomime”, Janice Honeyman will once again tell the story of a poor, country boy Jack, the family cow, the magic beans, the enormous beanstalk, the unfriendly giant and the enchanted hen that lays the golden eggs. The most essential character in a pantomime is the villain, in this case, the giant’s henchman – a truly evil rogue. The good fairy balances it all out and the audience is taken on a spectacular journey with Jack the Joller as the courageous hero.

Panto Returns

The last time that Jack and the Beanstalk was on stage was 2012, but as usual, Honeyman uses her wit to weave in current affairs and packs the script with double meanings and clever insinuations. There is good and evil, magic and loads of fun. As always with Joburg Theatre’s pantomimes, the creative team has a few big surprises in store…

Well-known actor, comedian, writer, radio and TV host, Casper De Vries, makes his pantomime debut as the villain Hendrik Hideosa. Returning to Joburg Theatre after her triumphant success in the role of Shug Avery in The Color Purple is Lelo Ramasimong as the good fairy Gorgeous Gugu. The role of Jack the Joller also brings back multi-talented young actor Zolani Shangase to the Joburg Theatre stage.

Featured in the cast of Jack and The Beanstalk are Germandt Geldenhuys – currently enjoying great success as Louis on TV’s Binnelanders – as Mies Miemie Mosbolletjie-Melba, Neo Motaung as Mrs Skwashie Mangowashie, 22-year-old Dezlenne Ulster-Weale as Raspberry Rose and panto stalwart Clive Gilson as Dom-Dik Canari.

Completing the all-South African company are (in alphabetical order) Cameron Botha, Ashleigh Butcher, Olivia Cloud, Gugu Dhlamini, Nolo Harmony, James McPhail, Arno Meyer, Given Mkhize, Noni Mkhonto, Katlego Nche, Justin Swartz and Carmen Tromp.

It’s all About the Show!

The 2019 pantomime is written and directed by Janice Honeyman, with choreography by Nicol Sheraton, musical direction by Dale-Ray Scheepers, lighting design by Graham McLusky and sound design by Akhona Bozo. For the sixteenth consecutive year, the show’s spectacular sets and costumes will be provided by the world’s leading pantomime producers, Qdos.

If you’re new to pantomime, but you love letting your hair down, go and experience the fun and hilarity of getting up, shouting at the baddies, booing and hissing at them, or chanting the routine “Oh no it isn’t, oh yes it is!”
