Jacques Courtin-Clarins, the founder of French luxury skincare brand, Clarins, believed that happiness was inextricably linked to beauty. I’m not sure if that resonates for most people, but for me, a new lipstick has the power to make me feel upbeat. Call me shallow, but we are galloping swiftly towards the festive season and end-of-year parties are a definite excuse to splash out and spoil yourself – and possibly some loved ones – with a few delectable makeup products.
Clarins holds a touch of nostalgia for me, as it was my first “grown up” skincare brand. What appealed to me was their ethos – they abandoned animal testing in 1987 and they always prefer to choose a natural ingredient over a chemical one, especially if it delivers the same level of effectiveness. It was way ahead of its time, sourcing ingredients with the utmost care for the environment in order to protect our planet’s biodiversity. Today, it’ s still a brand that innovates and delivers quality and excellence.
I have always had these Clarins makeup staples in my bag: Instant Concealer – the most smoothing concealer for tired eyes – and Instant Light lip Perfector in various shades – the ultimate lip balm for me. But recently I was lucky enough to try some gorgeous new goodies at Clarins House, which are ideal for the upcoming festive season.
Clarins Everlasting Youth Fluid
This is a new launch – a really exceptional foundation which hydrates and protects the skin and really is a beautiful combination of makeup and skincare. The packaging is exactly what you’d expect from Clarins – a round glass bottle with gold lid and a pump dispenser. The formula is creamy but lightweight and contains SPF 15, which provides UVA and UVB protection (not enough though, don’t skip your sunscreen). There are key ingredients to help smooth and firm the skin: Chicory, red jania extract, Konjac micropearls (plump the skin) and organic oat sugars. It has long wearing pigments – actually this foundation looks better the longer you wear it. Easy to apply, either with fingers or a brush, it spreads like a dream and makes the skin look naturally flawless and luminous.
Clarins Joli Blush 07 Cheeky Coral
I love this pretty blush for a pop of colour – it looks vibrant in the pan, but goes on with a subtle, natural glow. It’s enriched with hazelnut oil, giving instant radiance. It comes in a lovely compact, with mirror and a soft brush.
Clarins Water Lip Stain
There are various shades of this amazing stain containing organic Aloe Vera – you can kiss all night and still have colour on your lips. This is ideal if you don’t like the feel of lipstick.
Clarins Jolie Rouge Velvet
I’m simply not a fan of matte lipsticks – I don’t like the dry feeling and I happen to think that unless you have 20-year old lips – it’s not the way to go; but this formula surprised me – the apricot oil is comforting and hydrating – the colours are amazing and really long lasting without any dryness, yet the effect is a soft matte – really glamorous.
Clarins Fix Make-up
This was possibly my favourite product – and with the heat in Johannesburg, probably the one you need! A refreshing, fine mist which smells spa-like and leaves your skin feeling so soft and supple. Rose and grapefruit extracts revive your makeup and make your skin look radiant – a must for those who want to dance the night away yet have their makeup stay in place!
Clarins’ packaging is so elegant and tasteful– these products are also great ideas for stocking fillers for beauty lovers…
